Meet Tom Kamplain, the CEO and Program Director at the Georgia Institute of EMS. With an impressive 30 years dedicated to the Emergency Medical Services field, Tom has held various crucial roles, including that of a Flight Medic, ER Tech, SWAT Medic, Combat Medic, and firefighter. His experience isn't confined to just EMS; he has a diverse professional background, having served in the US Army and taken on roles such as Emergency Department Tech, Emergency Cardiac Care Education Coordinator, Corrections, and Bail Enforcement.

In terms of education and certifications, Tom is a force to be reckoned with. He holds certifications as a Paramedic, Paramedic Instructor Coordinator, BLS Instructor, ACLS Instructor, and PALS Instructor. Tom earned his Paramedic Certificate from Bevill State Community College, a BS in Information Systems Technology from Mercer University, an MS in Post-Secondary Education and Instructional Technology from Troy University, and another MS in Public Safety Leadership from Capella University.

Tom's leadership journey is equally commendable. He has held positions such as Field Training Officer, Training Director, and Field Supervisor at American Medical Response. He has also been the Shift Captain and Emergency Cardiac Care Instructor/Coordinator at Newton Medical Center. Furthermore, he served as the Program Director at DeKalb Technical College/Georgia Piedmont Technical College before taking the helm as the CEO/President at the Georgia Institute of EMS. His affiliations with the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians, the National Association of EMTs, and the Georgia Emergency Medical Services Association showcase his commitment to the profession.

Teaching has been an integral part of Tom's career. He has dedicated 25 incredible years to instructing in the EMS realm, with a decade of those years spent nurturing and mentoring students at the Georgia Institute of EMS. When asked about a notable memory from his teaching career, Tom says, "The countless impactful moments have made it a fulfilling journey. The real joy comes from knowing we're making a difference by preparing individuals to save lives and aiding them in achieving their certification goals."

On a personal note, Tom is driven by a genuine passion for assisting individuals during their most challenging times. He aims to bring solace and comfort to those in distress. When he isn't working, Tom indulges in hobbies like fishing, traveling, and, intriguingly, ballroom dancing. He and his wife are avid dancers, having participated in several competitions.

Discussing the future of EMS, Tom believes in impending revolutionary changes. He envisions technological advancements playing a pivotal role in propelling the profession forward, with more advanced skills coming into play. His advice for those embarking on their EMS journey is straightforward yet powerful: "Focus on foundational learning. Constantly refine your basic skills and ensure you never cease learning."
